Course Description

Chemistry is the study of the matter of which everything is made from an atomic perspective that enables us both to understand the changes that take place and to make new materials with useful properties. As a science chemistry involves a community effort at learning through careful control of variables, observation, record keeping, and such practices as wondering, conjecturing, thinking, and explaining. As a course chemistry provides a chance to better understand the world around us, to prepare for life in an ever more technology driven economy, and an opportunity to work at developing one's own scientific thought, thinking powers, reading, and communication skills. Chemistry 4620 is the Marple Newtown High School college preparatory course appropriate for those who wish to be better prepared when they attend college as a non-science major. The course is designed for the student is willing and able to study each day at home as well as at school to become more scientifically literate and to be better prepared to stay in college. Students are expected to be well prepared every day and to use their school provided Agenda to help get and stay organized. Curriculum, Textbook, and Laboratory Manual: The curriculum involves most of the major topics from textbook Holt Chemistry, by R. Thomas Myers, Keith B. Oldham, and Salvatore Tocci (Austin: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 2006). Topics are integrated into an inquiry oriented laboratory program that reinforces the material in the text while adding a unique opportunity to better learn the practices of science. Some of the laboratory activities come from the textbook, some from laboratory manuals, and some from other sources. Students wishing a more extensive preparation including electrochemistry, and more organic chemistry and nuclear chemistry should, after completing this course, elect the AP Chemistry course offered here at the high school. .
