Celsius, Anders

[persona]

Swedish astronomer born in Uppsala (1701-1744). In 1742, Celsius invented the centigrade temperature scale, using the freezing and boiling points of water as his reference temperatures. Interestingly, he defined the freezing point as 100° and the boiling point as 0°. The scale was reversed to its present form after his death. Celsius also was the first to suggest that the aurora has a magnetic cause.
