Mendel, Gregor
[person]
Austrian Augustinian monk and scientist born in Heizendorf (now Hynice, Chech Republic) (1822-1884). In 1865, Mendel wrote Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybride (Treatises on Plant Hybrids), which detailed his observations on the inheritance of various traits in cross-bred pea plants and presented his principles of hereditary transmission. Unfortunately, the importance of his work was not recognized until after his death.
