wave function

[noun]

A function that satisfies a wave equation and describes the properties of a wave. In quantum physics, a mathematical function (Ψ), described by the Schrödinger equation, that is used to describe all possible states of a fundamental particle. While the wave function cannot be measured directly, its square is a real number that can be measured, and which corresponds to the probability of finding a particle at a particular location.
